SOHA ’24 Lengthier Conference Program Available!
We are DAYS away from our exciting conference! We are sending out a lengthier conference program for you to review. The final version will be released to you digitally (sorry, no paper copies will be available to save the roots and trees dear to the conference theme) when you check in at the registration table. Parking information is included in this program along with maps for parking and of the Highlander Union Building. Catered lunches are also included (yes, we will have a coffee/water station for all days of the conference and the SOHA business meeting will include a farmstyle breakfast!). Also, please see page 50 for brief information on our silent auction.ย Please noteโwe will be closing conference registration on Thursday (May 30th) at 11pm PST.ย No on-site registration will be available since we are close to selling out! 2024 Eva Tulene Watt Scholarship for Native American Scholars

Eva Tulene Watt was a distinguished White Mountain Apache elder, author, and oral historian whose narration of her family and tribal customs has assisted in the preservation of White Mountain Apache tribal culture (Donโt Let the Sun Step Over You: A White Mountain Apache Family Life, 1860-1975, with Keith Basso, University of Arizona, 2004).
In her honor, the Eva Tulene Watt scholarship will be awarded to a Native American practitioner of oral history to attend the annual conference in Riverside, California, May 31 โ June 3, 2024. Funding for the scholarship will include a cash award of $600 for use toward hotel, travel, and food expenses incurred while attending the conference. In addition, SOHA will provide conference registration, and a one-year membership to SOHA.
Native American students, teachers, independent oral historians, librarians, museum curators, and individuals associated with nonprofit organizations are encouraged to apply. Recipients are not eligible for the Eva Tulene Watt scholarship two years in a row.
The application letter (300-word limit) must include the following items:
โข Contact information for the applicant, including tribal affiliation
โข A short biographical statement, including a brief description of any
current or prior oral history work
โข A brief explanation of how the scholarship will advance the
applicantโs goals in the field of oral history
โข Names and phone numbers of two references
Following the conference, the recipient will write a brief report highlighting their conference experience, focusing on one or two presentations attended, for publication in the SOHA newsletter.

2024 GENERAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Southwest Oral History Association will award two or three scholarships to deserving oral historians and practitioners to attend the annual conference which will be held in Riverside, California from May 31-June 2, 2024. Funding will include a cash award of $400 for each recipient, $100 of which will be disbursed prior to the conference, with the balance issued on the final day of the conference. These awards will be applied toward hotel and travel expenses. Free conference registration is included in the scholarship. Additionally, a SOHA member point of contact/mentor for the conference will be provided upon request. Students, teachers, independent oral historians, community oral historians and individuals associated with nonprofit organizations are encouraged to apply.

E-MAIL using the prescribed file naming convention:
- Cover Letter: Submit a cover letter including name, address, telephone number and e-mail of applicant. The letter should include a statement of the applicantโs financial need; an indication of the level of financial support, if any, that is offered by the applicantโs institution or employer; and a paragraph explaining how the scholarship will advance the applicantโs goals in the field of oral history.
- Applicant Resume: A resume of not more than one page, including names and phone numbers of two professional or academic references.
The recipient will be expected to attend the entire conference and write a brief article highlighting conference experiences for possible publication in the SOHA newsletter.

2024 Mini Grant opportunity

The Southwest Oral History Association will award up to three mini-grants with a total for all at $1500. Funds may be used for interviewing, equipment, transcription, editing, publishing, and other oral history related expenses. Students, teachers, and independent researchers, historical societies, archives, museums, and non-profits are encouraged to apply to conduct research on the Southwest. There is no application form. PLEASE SUBMIT THE FOLLOWING AS WORD ATTACHMENTS AND SEND VIA E-MAIL:
A Cover Letter: Submit a one-page cover letter including name, address, telephone number and e-mail of applicant. If an organization is applying, include the same as above. Include brief background history on applicant (not more than one page).
- Concise description of Oral History Project: Include the title of the project, background on development, need for topic, planned number of interviews, expected length and depth, oral historiansโ names and oral history experience, archiving plans, possible presentation plans, and project timetable. Maximum of two double-spaced pages.
- A Budget for the project: Include amount requested and other sources of funding.
- One letter of recommendation.
