Hansen Lecture to Focus on Digitizing Japanese American History

In the fall of 2013, Greg Williams contacted Cal State Fullerton’s Lawrence De Graaf Center for Oral and Public History with a proposal to create a single website housing Japanese American history archives from various collections in the California State University system.

Today, the systemwide project has 14 collaborators — including COPH — and has received funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities, National Archives, National Park Service and the California State Library.

Williams, director of archives and special collections at Cal State Dominguez Hills, will visit CSUF Tuesday, Nov. 5, to deliver COPH’s annual Hansen Lecture on “Building a Statewide Digital and Archival Collaboration: The CSU Japanese American Digitization Project.” Free and open to the public, the lecture will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the Titan Student Union, Portola Pavilion A.

“It is evident that the materials on this site hold research value for the hundreds who have used them,” said Natalie Navar-Garcia, COPH archivist. “COPH is proud to be a part of the collaborative CSU Japanese American website project.”

True to its student-driven approach, COPH’s Japanese American Oral History Project was launched in 1972 at the urging of undergraduate history major Betty E. Mitson. Working with faculty members Gary L. Shumway and Arthur Hansen, she transcribed, edited and indexed a series of tape-recorded interviews pertaining to the World War II Japanese American evacuation.

The project continued to engage students and faculty members in research for decades to come, amassing an archive of more than 300 oral histories. The collection includes notable oral histories with community leader Clarence I. Nishizu, civil rights activist Frank Emi, Nisei journalist James Omura, and longtime Manzanar Committee chair Sue Embrey.

To date, COPH has contributed over 100 oral histories to the CSU collaborative website.

SOHA at OHA 2019

Dear SOHA Member:

First and foremost, we want to thank you for your continued participation in SOHA. Without your loyalty and support, we would not be able to actively develop our communities and continuously provide our members with valuable benefits. Put simply, you, our members, make what we do possible. Over the last year, you have enabled us to accomplish a number of initiatives:

  1. Our 2018 Annual Conference, co-sponsored with the Lawrence de Graaf Center for Oral and Public History at California State University, Fullerton, was a great success and drew participants from throughout our region and across the country. During the conference we proudly presented our annual James V. Mink Award to longtime SOHA member and OHA leader Dr. Natalie Fousekis.
  2. Our Scholarships and Mini-Grants Awards programs continue to be a strong and vital part of our efforts. This year we are giving an unprecedented number of awards to a wide variety of recipients and practitioners. We provide highlights of their work in our newsletters, website, and social media platforms.
  3. We are cosponsoring the 2019 Oral History Association conference October 16-20 in Salt Lake City, UT.  This means reduced rates for SOHA members. It also means that there will be special SOHA sessions and our annual Awards reception on October 19, which is open to all participants.
  4. As mandated by our organizational By-Laws, we now are holding elections for the 2019-21 SOHA Board of Directors. If you will be attending the OHA Salt Lake City conference, please join us for our Business Meeting on Saturday, October 19 at the conference hotel, where the elections will be held. See our SOHA Board Nomination Candidate Statements.
  5. Last but not least, we are planning our 2020 SOHA Conference for March 27-29 at our home institution, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Our Call for Proposals announced the annual conference with the theme of “Home(Lands) and Oral Histories of (Re)Vitalization” at the Lied Library on the campus of the University of Nevada.

We hope you have benefited personally and professionally from your membership with SOHA. You can continue to support our organization in its mission to promote oral history understanding, cooperation, guidance, and community-based as well as institutional programs. Be sure to let us know if you have any suggestions. We’d love to hear your feedback!

Please renew now at https://squareup.com/store/southwest-oral-history-association .

Kind regards,

Jennifer Keil, Interim President

Keeping a Record: The LDS Church History Library and Archives

Nearly from its founding in 1830, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has encouraged the production and preservation of history. The Church History Library, located across the street from historic Temple Square, is home to state-of-the-art facilities that hold and process historical documents, artifacts, photographs, and other records that document the history of the church, its members, and the Restoration Movement of which it was part. Come learn about the Church History Library’s purpose, the facility, and the types of records stored in the vaults from the Church History Library Director, Keith Erekson. Justin Bray, Chair of the Oral History Working Group, will then talk about the Church History Library’s approach to oral histories. Your visit will end by viewing the “Foundations of Faith” exhibit where key documents of the Church of Jesus Christ’s history is displayed.

*This tour will take place on Friday, October 18, 10am. If interested, please note that this tour will require a considerable amount of walking. Participants will meet in the hotel lobby and walk to the Church History Library, and will walk back.

Call for Nominations: 2019-2021 SOHA Board of Directors

It’s that time again, SOHA members: Board nominations are upon us!

Your current Co-Presidents, Juan D. Coronado and Marcie Gallo, are completing their terms of office as of July 1, 2019. As is the SOHA custom, current 1st Vice President Jennifer Keil has agreed to assume the office of SOHA President. In addition, current 2nd Vice President Farina King is willing to assume the duties of 1st Vice President.

Also willing to remain in office are Carlos Lopez, Arizona Delegate, and Rachael Cassidy, New Mexico Delegate. This does not preclude other SOHA members from being nominated or self-nominating for these important positions.

Some who have served our organization well for the last few years will step aside. We offer our sincere thanks to Caryll Batt Dziedziak (Treasurer), Barbara Tabach (Secretary), Virginia Espino (California Delegate), Stefani Evans (Nevada Delegate), Midge Dellinger (Student Representative), and Bridget Groat (Native American Representative)

We now have several vacancies for Board positions and welcome nominations and self-nominations. Please see pages 8 and 9 of our Summer 2019 Newsletter for descriptions of duties for the positions. All nominees must be current members of SOHA.

To nominate yourself or someone else (with their consent, of course), please send your name and contact information, along with two sentences on why you or the person you are nominating are qualified and interested in being on the SOHA Board of Directors, by August 1 to: SOHA Nominating Committee Chair Sarah Moorhead,sarahemoorhead@fastmail.fm
