The Lawrence de Graaf Center for Oral and Public History (COPH)

“In the autumn of 1959, Orange County State College opened its doors in schoolrooms borrowed from Fullerton Union High School. A year later classes moved to temporary buildings erected on the site of what had been a Valencia orange grove. In 1968, the name changed to California State College, Fullerton, and permanent buildings began to grace the campus. In February of that year, Professor Gary L. Shumway taught the first course in oral history techniques and methodology.

This course launched the Oral History Program. Professor Shumway organized the innovative Oral History Program under the  sponsorship of the History Department, the Library, and the   Patrons of the Library. The program’s aim was to record and preserve the experiences of  ordinary citizens who had been participants in or eyewitnesses to significant historical events.

In the intervening years, Cal State Fullerton, has attained its university status and has celebrated its 40th anniversary. The Oral History Program, the fourth oldest program in the state, has grown as well. In 2002, it became the center for Oral and Public History (COPH).

Today the program encourages individual students, university classes, faculty, and independent researchers from beyond the CSUF campus to study and interpret information found in its archived interview tapes and transcripts, photographs, and other ephemeral documentation.”

The Center for Oral and Public History provides the following forms to their students. Courses are offered through the History Department. Classes deposit oral histories and photos into the archive for long-term preservation. Public history courses uses the archival materials in exhibition design. About the A&D Certificate
The SAA Arrangement & Description certificate program allows archivists to gain more experience and knowledge in this single topic than is generally available in graduate archival programs. This approach provides archivists with extended descriptive training to expand the skill set they gained in graduate school, and it also can facilitate career shifts within the archival field (e.g., moving from public services to processing/cataloging). Taken as a whole, these courses provide an integrated programmatic framework for archivists and others at various levels within their institutions whose areas of practice include arrangement and description.

About the DAS Certificate
SAA is committed to providing education and training to ensure that archivists adopt appropriate practices for appraising, capturing, preserving, and providing access to electronic records. That’s why we’ve developed the Digital Archives Specialist (DAS) Curriculum and Certificate Program, designed to provide you with the information and tools you need to manage the demands of born-digital records. The DAS curriculum, developed by experts in the field of digital archives, is structured in tiers of study that guide you to choose courses based on your specific knowledge, training, and needs. You can choose individual courses—or you can take your learning to the next level by earning a Digital Archives Specialist Certificate from SAA after completing required coursework and passing both course and comprehensive examinations.

Come and celebrate the diversity of stories that make Southern California such a place of discovery. At the Los Angeles Archives Bazaar, presented by L.A. as Subject and the USC Libraries, anyone with an interest in the region’s history will find something of value. A broad array of institutions and archives will have experts on hand to show off their collections and answer questions.

In addition to the wealth of information on display from exhibitors, day-long programming will feature preservation workshops and enlightening presenatations.

The USC Libraries serve as the host institution for L.A. as Subject, an alliance of libraries, museums, and other archival and cultural organizations. The relationship complements the USC libraries’ strong regional history collection and is a natural outgrowth of the libraries’ efforts to preserve and expand access to the primary sources of L.A. history.

USC is minutes from downtown Los Angeles and is easily accessible by major freeways and the Metro Expo line. Doheny Library is located in the center of campus, adjacent to Alumni Park and across from Bovard Auditorium, on Trousdale Avenue. Symposium on Displacement, Diaspora and Documentation

Forced displacement and other human migration crises raise complex interacting issues about nation-states, laws, borders, human rights, citizenship and identity, security, resource allocation, and information and communication technologies (ICT).  Integral to this complexity, documentation and particularly official records are pervasive and fundamental yet somehow rarely conspicuous.  Much attention has been focused on official verification of identities and citizenship of displaced persons and other migrants, vetting them for security risks, reunifying families, and determining whether or not they qualify for asylum and resettlement. However the issues that asylum seekers and other migrants confront in understanding, accessing, carrying, preserving and producing the kinds of authoritative documentation required for these as well as other bureaucratic processes in their future lives remain under-addressed.

This one day symposium is sponsored by the Refugee Rights in Records Project of the UCLA Department of Information Studies’ Center for Information as Evidence and the Liverpool University Centre for Archive Studies, as well as the Middle Eastern Rights Association. It will bring together speakers from a range of backgrounds: people with experience of coming to the United States as refugees, asylum seekers or economic migrants; those who assist and advocate for them; and record keepers, archivists and museum curators who manage official records or collect and (re)present documentation of displacement and diaspora.  Among topics to be addressed are:

•       Issues faced by child and women migrants and relating to family separation/reunification
•       Coping with trauma and health concerns
•       Education and literacy concerns and initiatives
•       Classification considerations and more existential identity dilemmas
•       Support infrastructure for personal recordkeeping
•       Development of a platform to ensure personal rights in and to bureaucratic records
•       Documenting and archiving current and historical personal and community displacement and diaspora experiences
•       The design and implementation of humanitarian-based information technologies interventions

The symposium is one of a series of workshops taking place across the globe in 2018 to highlight the issues linked to records and other documentation for refugees, asylum seekers and others forced by their circumstances to leave their homes and seek more secure lives and futures elsewhere.

OHA Archives Interest Group

“Since 1966, the Oral History Association has served as the principal membership organization for people committed to the value of oral history. OHA engages with policy makers, educators, and others to help foster best practices and encourage support for oral history and oral historians. With an international membership, OHA serves a broad and diverse audience including teachers, students, community historians, archivists, librarians, and filmmakers.”

OHA has an Archives Interest Group that provides pragmatic approaches to storing analog and born-digital files. This group was established at the 2014 OHA annual meeting. Participate in the annual meeting on October 10-14, 2018 at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
